Journey to the City of Mercy

On Palm Sunday, a newly designed ‘hub’ of online information and resources was launched for pilgrims and organisers in preparation for World Youth Day 2016.

With 16 months to go, the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference, Office for Youth, launched a new look World Youth Day (WYD) website for potential pilgrims and Pilgrimage Coordinators.

The site will become the Australian central repository of information and resources in preparation for the international gathering in Krakow, Poland next year. Various webpages include practical information about the event, suggested prayers, videos and photos from previous WYD’s and areas to register your interest.

The Australian Catholic Bishops Conference, Office for Youth, invites young people from dioceses across Australia to travel to Krakow, Poland from 26 July to 31 July 2016 to celebrate World Youth Day. Young people are called to ‘journey to the city of mercy’, the home of St John Paul II.

On Palm Sunday, 27 March 2015, the Catholic Church in Australia celebrated World Youth Day within the dioceses. In his message for World Youth Day this year, Pope Francis asks young people to reflect on the Beatitudes that speak directly ‘to your lives’.

Pope Francis said: ‘I urge you: Have the courage to be happy!’

Projects Manager of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference, Office for Youth, Gabrielle Sinclair said: ‘Some dioceses across the country officially launched their World Youth Day pilgrimage on Palm Sunday. We are calling on young people in parishes, schools, universities, both in urban and rural areas to get involved in the World Youth Day pilgrimage by contacting their local diocese.’

Organisers of the international event in Krakow are asking people around the world to unite in prayer for World Youth Day 2016. A virtual marathon of prayers is taking place through social media using the hashtag #prayforWYD.
