His Beatitude Mar George Cardinal Alencherry, the Major Achbishop of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church will commence a pastoral visit to Australia in November 2012, the first ever pastoral visit by the Head of the Syro-Malabar Church to members of the church in this country.

As Head of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church Cardinal George Alencherry is looking forward to meeting his people here in Australia.

“I am very excited to visit with some of the 10,000 Syro-Malabar families spread across Australia”, said Cardinal Alencherry.

“I am looking forward to meeting my people and learning how their spiritual needs are being looked after according to the traditions of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church”, he said.

The Cardinal was invited to visit Australia by the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference (ACBC) and the Syro-Malabar community, and during his time in Australia will meet with members of the ACBC as well as with the local communities.

“The Australian Catholic Bishops have provided wonderful pastoral support and assistance in helping our community live their spiritual lives in accordance with the Syro-Malabar tradition,” said Cardinal Alencherry.

The Syro-Malabar Church is an Oriental (Eastern Rite) Catholic Church, in full communion with the Church of Rome. It is the second largest of the 22 Oriental Catholic Churches with over 4 million vibrant believers worldwide.

The community in Australia includes over 10,000 families with major communities in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra and smaller communities in country and regional locations.

The Major Archbishop will celebrate Masses with various Syro-Malabar communities across Australia beginning from Sydney during his visit.
