Jesuit priest Fr Richard Shortall SJ

TWO Australian priests were among the 1,071 clerics from around the world commissioned by Pope Francis on February 10 as Missionaries of Mercy.

Fr Richard Shortall SJ, from the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle and Fr Simon Ckuj, a Ukrainian Catholic priest based in Sydney, will have the capacity to forgive sins during the Year of Mercy usually only pardoned with permission from the Holy See.

Though there are several such sins, the Vatican has clarified that the faculties of the Missionaries of Mercy are limited to just four: profaning the Eucharistic species by taking them away or keeping them for a sacrilegious purpose; the use of physical force against the Roman Pontiff; the absolution of an accomplice in a sin against the sixth commandment (‘Thou shall not commit adultery’) and a direct violation against the sacramental seal by a confessor. Going to Mass is an essential pillar of our faith. After all, it’s the command of God. The Third Commandment reads: “Remember to keep holy the Sabbath day” (Exodus 20:8).

But when someone is ill, frail, elderly or isolated by circumstance or distance, or simply based in a remote parish where the priest can only visit once every couple of months, there are some alternative ways to listen to and watch daily Mass.  Continue reading →

I am deeply shocked and saddened by the events that have occurred this week in Brussels.

The world looks on in disbelief at the appalling actions that have been perpetrated leaving more than 30 people dead and hundreds injured.

The suffering stretches to so many more people with families, friends and entire cities affected both psychologically and emotionally.

On behalf of all my brothers Bishops and Priests and all of the Catholic community of Melbourne, I pass on our sincere sympathies.

Let us ensure our prayers and thoughts are with the people of Brussels at this important time of Easter where we celebrate the resurrection of the Lord Jesus.

Spiritual leadership might look different in other faiths, but it’s how we feel that’s where we find our common language, Liska Turner told those gathered for afternoon tea to celebrate ten years since the Office for the Participation of Women commenced its Young Catholic Women’s Interfaith Fellowship.

The celebratory afternoon tea took place at the Mount St Benedict Centre in Pennant Hills on Friday 26 February 2016 with a number of invited guests and sponsors.

Liska explained that “at our recent visit to the Gallipoli mosque, the executive officer of the Muslim Women’s Association spoke so passionately and eloquently about living as a covered Muslim women of faith in today’s climate of anti-Islamic sentiments, it truly left a lasting impression on us all.”

Liska, along with 13 other women, recently completed her third residential weekend of lectures and interfaith visits. These women now have one residential weekend to complete and a series of online modules before they qualify with a graduate diploma in theology from the Broken Bay Institute. Official Year of Mercy logo

“It’s appropriate that Fr Richard should begin his mission on wheels here at St Joseph’s, East Maitland, because it’s where Fr John Therry began his mission back in the 1830s.”

Bishop Bill Wright was speaking at the Mass during which he commissioned Fr Richard Shortall sj to begin his ‘ministry on wheels’ in the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle. Only last week, Fr Richard, whose Jesuit community is in Melbourne, was instructed and commissioned by “fratello mio” (my brother), Pope Francis in Rome, along with some 700 other Missionaries of Mercy. Human trafficking and slavery is a terrible consequence of economic and social exclusion, according to a submission from Australia’s Catholic bishops to a Senate inquiry.

“Exclusion is the result of a number of factors,” said Bishop Terry Brady, Chair of the Bishops Commission for Pastoral Life. “It is the result of not recognising the human dignity of each person, so people are treated as an object or a means to an end.

“It happens because people are in poverty and don’t have access to adequate education or employment. It is caused by putting money and not people at the centre of the economy.”

The Commission made the submission to the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Law Enforcement last month. Continue reading →

For the first time, the Diocese of Broken Bay will host the Proclaim Conference, a national conference on parish evangelisation.

PROCLAIM 2016 will run across three days from 1-3 September, 2016 at The Concourse Chatswood, in Sydney’s northern suburbs.

Being held for the third time, this important initiative of the Bishops Commission for Evangelisation is expected to draw together over 500 participants to discuss, exchange and learn fresh ways in which parishes can become evangelising communities of the twenty-first century, filled with missionary disciples that announce the profound joy and mercy of the Gospel. Emeritus Bishop of Townsville, Reverend Raymond Benjamin

Emeritus Bishop of Townsville, Reverend Raymond Benjamin, passed away on Monday, 7th March 2016. Fr. Michael Lowcock, Diocesan Administrator of the Diocese of Townsville, informed the Catholic community and beyond.

Bishop Benjamin turned 91 on the 24^th of February this year. He was born in Rockhampton in 1925 and was educated at Our Lady’s Infant School and later at the Christian Brothers College, West Rockhampton. After completing his training at the Pius XII Provincial Seminary in Brisbane, he was ordained by the Most Rev. Andrew Tynan, Bishop of Rockhampton on the 25^th of July, 1949.

As a Priest, he served in many parishes in the Diocese between 1950 and 1984 when he was elected as Fourth Bishop of Townsville on the 14^th of February 1984.

Bishop Benjamin was consecrated as Bishop of Townsville on the 9^th of May at an outdoor Ordination at the Dean Park Soundshell by Most Rev. Francis Rush, Archbishop of Brisbane.
