The Catholic Diocese of Parramatta has launched an emergency appeal to assist people who have been impacted by the bushfires in the Blue Mountains region.
On the weekend of 26-27 October, parishes across Western Sydney will be taking up a collection.
The appeal is being co-ordinated by CatholicCare Social Services Parramatta. Donations will be used to provide material support and counselling to people in areas affected by the fires.
The Bishop of Parramatta, Most Rev Anthony Fisher OP said: “Times of great difficulty are often also times of great solidarity, expressed by an outpouring of generosity across the community.
“We are all indebted to the firefighters, police and volunteers for their courageous efforts in protecting human life and property.
“The Holy Father, Pope Francis, has expressed his concern and prayerful solidarity with us at this time. He is praying with us that the fires soon abate.
“I assure you of my prayers for the victims and their loved ones, for those fighting the fires and caring for the victims, and for all the affected communities.”
